Mar 2011 - Heritage Lottery Fund Stage 1 Grant
We are very excited to report that we have been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund Stage 1 grant of £18,000 to enable detailed proposals for the painstaking restoration of the building to be prepared by the appropriate specialists.
Feb 2011 - Langham Airfield Memorial Stone
In addition to the Langham Airfield Memorial Stone unveiling (Our events page has full details) FoLD have erected a sign detailing the Dome's wartime use and in recent weeks a smart new boundary fence has been erected. We are most grateful to Bernard Matthews Ltd for providing and erecting the fencing. A new ditch to prevent access onto the field has been dug behind the new fence and, again, we are very grateful to Peter Wordingham Plant Hire, of Binham, for carrying out this work free of charge.
Jan 2010 - Friends of Langham Dome Formed
The Friends of Langham Dome were formed to allow the local community and enthusiasts to assist the owners of the Dome, The North Norfolk Historic Buildings Trust, in the restoration of the building and, ultimately, in the opening of the building to the public as an important part of our local and national heritage.
2008 - Ownership Transferred
In 2008, Bernard Matthews Ltd, the then owner, kindly agreed to transfer ownership of the Dome to The North Norfolk Historic Buildings Trust so that its long term future as an important national monument could be protected.
1998 - Detailed Survey
In 1998 a detailed survey was commissioned by the Trust and the necessary works to secure a 50 year life for the Dome were established. Further work on developing a sustainable future for the Dome and meeting the various requirements of potential funders has continued from this baseline.
Built in 1942, the Dome is rendered externally with concrete, it has a metal rod and mesh substructure and the interior is lined with white fibreboard. Deterioration of the concrete rendered surface has led to degrading of the substructure and the loss of the internal lining.
1996 - Alert Raised
In 1996 following contact from Langham Parish Council the Trust started to look into the possibility of restoring the Langham Dome.
