The North Norfolk Historic Buildings Trust
The North Norfolk Historic Buildings Trust is a registered charity established in 1996 to restore buildings of architectural or historic interest for the benefit of the people of North Norfolk and the public at large.
In 1996 following contact from Langham Parish Council the Trust started to look into the possibility of restoring the Langham Dome.
Built in 1942, the Dome is rendered externally with concrete, it has a metal rod and mesh sub-structure and the interior is lined with white fibreboard. Deterioration of the concrete rendered surface has led to degrading of the substructure and the loss of the internal lining.
Establishing ownership is a significant help in seeking funds - in this case funds for restoration of the Dome and interpretation of its 1939-45 wartime uses as a training facility for ground to air anti-aircraft gunners.
Positive discussions with Bernard Matthews Ltd, the owners of the building prior to the Trust, led in 2008 to a generous gift to the Trust of the Dome together with about one-half acre of land and with legal costs also kindly met by the donor. Since then, the Trust has been successful in receiving an English Heritage grant towards the cost of repairs and is actively seeking further grant aid. The Trust is now in partnership with the Friends of Langham Dome, an organisation that has developed from the enthusiasm of local people who regard the Dome in part as an important memorial to all those who served at Langham during the war.
